About Us

The Chattanooga/Hixson TN SDA chapter was originally founded by Dennis Tate February 2007.  The journey began with continued membership building efforts and organization strategies and action until the club was chartered in early 2008.

The Club grew rapidly until in 2010 it was decided that it was time for it to "split".  The new club was formed under the name "Tennessee Valley Working Dog Association.

A special thanks goes out to Tom Cawood  and Jeff Phillips for their hard charging efforts in helping and building not only the original Chattanooga Chapter but also in the establishment of our new club - The Tennessee Valley Working Dog Association.  Thank you!

Our current Board is made up of the following members:

  •  Tom Cawood - President  (5-4-12)

  •  Shari Steven - Vice President  (5-4-12)

  •  Sherle Thompson -- Secretary  (9-4-10)

  •  Cody Sims -- Treasurer  (5-4-10)

This chapter has grown tremendously since its founding.  It now has over 20 human members and even more canine participants.

UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS ARE DOGS TRAINED

With TV-WDA, dogs are trained under the conditions that are most suitable for the individual dog regarding all aspects of the dog’s character, drives, and abilities. The training directors of TV-WDA are able to review and read individual dogs and recommend or implement appropriate style(s) of training.  Dog owners are allowed and encouraged to dictate what styles of training they are most comfortable with after appropriate training recommendations are made.  Whether the current training agenda is obedience or protection, all dogs are always under review and direction of our experienced training directors.  We feel our members deserve the ultimate dog training experience within a fun, energetic, organized, and comfortable environment of dog lovers (individual pet owners, dog breeders, law enforcement & city servicemen/women, etc). You may desire your dog to be trained in either area(s): family obedience, personal protection, law enforcement service, trial competition, etc.). We can and will provide whatever your needs may be.

Our training directors not only explain the reasoning for the training applications used but assist you in becoming more familiar with these applications. The training directors apply practical and real life situations to the training agenda to make the best training experiences during each and every training session.  These techniques have proven time and time again to work exceptional well and help maintain and improve our members’ dogs to surprising levels of competition readiness. Your dog can be one of those dogs no matter his or her age.  Feel free to contact/talk with one of our training directors directly regarding any questions you may have.

General Information on Joining TV-WDA:

Everyone is welcome to come and watch our training.  You may bring your dog(s) and participate but you must bring proof that the dog(s) are current with all shots.  You do not have to join immediately....come, participate, and make sure that you and your dogs are comfortable with us and our training.  The first step to effective training is attendance and enjoyment of both the dogs and the owners.  It requires both parties to make a good team -- If either the dog or the owner does not enjoy participating eventually you will quit attending.

You do not have to start training at any particular time or level.  Unlike a large percentage of training classes which have certain times that you can join, we allow you the flexibility of joining the organization at any time.

Your dog does not have to be at a certain level of training to join.  Our training is designed so that every dog and every aspiring trainer can start immediately.  The classes are tailored to each individuals current level and speed of training.  Dogs that learn quickly are not hindered by dogs advancing at a slower rate.

Every breed of dog is welcome.  Our members participate with German Shepherds, Dobermans, Belgian Malinois, Rotties, Bull Dogs, Collies, Australian Shepherds, Tervurens, Great Danes, etc.  Every dog has a purpose and we like to be able to help find that purpose and allow that dog to reach its full potential.

If you decide to join the Tennessee Valley Working Dog Association, the annual dues are as follows:

  •   TVWDA Club dues:

    • $400 for the year or

    • $100 per quarter
